As the name suggests, Brazilian waxing originated from Brazil for women who wanted to wear the
new thong bikinis. It was introduced to this country in 1987 and became famous by seven sisters
who started it at their salon in New York City. However, the waxing of the genital area is not new.
Waxing of the genital area has been prevalent for centuries in Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt,
Arabia, Turkey and Persia.
Brazilian waxing is the removal of all hair from the pubic region, inner and outer labia and inner
buttocks. A strip of pubic hair (in the shape of a strip or triangle) may be left on the front. Here are
a few benefits and reasons people receive Brazilian waxing:

I would recommend researching salons and spas in your area, its definitely not something that
every place or technician can do properly. I would make sure that the salon has been offering the
service for at least 1 year and the technician has been professionally performing them (not
including school) for at least 2 years. It is something that takes proper education and training for
the service to be successful. Once you’ve found a place that has these qualifications, here are a
few things to prepare for your waxing:
The hair needs to be at least a ¼ of an inch in length, typically 2 weeks after shaving.
Its best to avoid getting waxed the week before and during your period, just because the skin is a
little more sensitive during this time.
You can take a pain reliever (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) 1 hour before the service, to help ease the
discomfort.
Avoid the sun and tanning beds 24 hours before and after the wax.
I would recommend wearing loose fitting underwear and pants after the waxing.
Avoid excessive heat and sweating (hot tubs, baths, saunas and working out) 1 hour before and
after the wax, to avoid irritation.
Start exfoliating the area with either a loofah or gentle scrub 2-3 days before your wax.
Once you arrive for your appointment there are a few things to
look for to reassure you that the salon/spa is qualified.
The receptionist or technician should have you sign off on some type of consent form, to make
sure you yourself should and can get the wax.
The room should be private and appear to be clean and sanitary.
There should be some type of drape on the bed preferably a paper sheet, so you know for sure
that it is new for each client.
Look at the technician make sure she/he appears clean and well groomed, hair should be pulled
back and wearing some type of apron or jacket.
Look at the area that the wax warmers and supplies are on, make sure it's clean of hairs and no
wax residue is on them. Any tweezers and scissors should be in a sterilizer or a container that is
filled with a blue liquid (this is Barbicide a disinfecting solution). Any supplies such as strips, wooden
applicators and cotton pads should be in a covered container.
The wax technician SHOULD NOT TOUCH YOU UNLESS THEY ARE
WEARING GLOVES!! Make sure that the technician is throwing away
every stick they use on you and using a new stick on each application.
Never let the technician tell you that the wax is hot enough to kill the bacteria!
(I doubt the wax is 212 degrees).
Seriously, waxing is not that painful, like I said it's like pulling off a band-aid. It stings a bit but it is
not a lingering pain. Most technicians have been waxing for awhile and have seen every shape and
size, so never feel embarrassed or self-conscious. We don’t pay attention to any of that, we just
want to make you as comfortable and hair free as possible. You may be a little sensitive and red
after the wax this will subside after a few hours and lasts no longer than 24 hours. It definitely gets
easier every time you get one, most people schedule their appointments every 4-6 weeks. I
promise you once you start waxing you will never go back to shaving!
